The Orphanage

The Orphanage

The Orphanage is a film is inspired by the story of the filmmaker’s great great aunt, who spent the last years of her life as a Christian missionary in China. She died before fulfilling her wish of opening an orphanage, but her thoughts were recorded in long letters written to her mother back in Scotland.

Set in the rural plains of Lesotho, the film documents a day in the life of children living in a Buddhist orphanage funded by a Taiwanese charity. The orphans’ confined and strictly regimented lives – depicted in a sequence of long, trance-like chanting scenes – leads to an exploration of shifting power relations and moral value systems.

Dir. Teboho Edkins - 8min - 2021 - Germany, South Africa, France

"Delicately observing every gesture, the film explores the relationships of power present in the heart of the orphanage and ultimately questions the conditions for the sharing of a system of moral values." - Visions du Reel
